Traffic Lights That Watch and Learn: Video + AI for Smoother Freeways
Freeway on-ramps use signals to meter cars, but most systems rely on a few roadside sensors. What if the signal could watch the road and learn in real time?
Researchers propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) system that reads live traffic camera frames and decides when to let cars onto the freeway. Instead of pre-set rules, the AI learns directly from video—capturing queues, merging patterns, and flow across a wide area.
- Lower travel times on the mainline
- Shorter on-ramp queues
- Higher downstream traffic flow
Tested on real-world data, the approach outperformed a state-of-practice ramp metering method, showing that cameras can unlock smarter, more adaptive control.
