Can AI think creatively?

Large language models are great at step-by-step logic, but real-world breakthroughs need more than routine problem-solving. This paper proposes a creative reasoning framework, rooted in cognitive science, and turns it into practice with "Universe of Thoughts" (UoT): methods that help LLMs search wider and smarter for innovative answers.

Combinational: remix known ideas into novel combinations.
Exploratory: systematically probe the adjacent possible.
Transformative: reframe rules and goals to unlock new paths.

The authors also introduce new tasks that demand creativity and a benchmark that evaluates solutions on three axes: feasibility (as a constraint), utility, and novelty.

Across comparisons with leading reasoning techniques and commercial models, UoT delivers stronger creative solutions—promising for open-ended domains like drug discovery and business strategy.
