When AI Image Generators Forget Culture—and How to Fix It
Why it matters
Text-to-image tools look stunning, but when you prompt them in different languages, the cultural details often fade. Many outputs drift toward “neutral” or English-centric imagery instead of reflecting local customs, symbols, and styles.
What’s new
- The team shows the problem isn’t missing knowledge—culture cues already exist inside the models but aren’t activated.
- They probe the network to pinpoint a small set of culture-sensitive neurons in a few layers.
- Two fixes: (1) boost those neurons at inference time (no full fine-tuning), and (2) lightly update only the culture-relevant layers.
Results
On their CultureBench evaluation, both strategies consistently improve cultural consistency while preserving image quality and diversity.
Practical takeaway: we can “wake up” culture in today’s models without retraining them from scratch.
